Erasmus+ and Brexit
Erasmus+ and Brexit
The Brexit deal between the UK and the EU states that the UK has withdrawn from the Erasmus+ programme of the EU for the period 2021-2027. This affects both the Erasmus+ Exchange Programme (for exchanges) and the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme (for internships, traineeships and research projects). Especially with regards to exchanges, much is still unclear about the exact date of discontinuing the exchange agreements with our partners in the UK. Here is what we know in any case.
Erasmus+ grants
Erasmus+ Exchange grant in 2022-2023
In the academic year 2022/2023, the UvA will make Erasmus+ exchanges possible in both the first semester and the second semester. Exceptions may exist. If a British university leaves the Erasmus+ program earlier, study exchanges to that university will not be possible in 2022/2023. If you are considering going on an exchange to a British university in 2022/2023, you can ask your International Office about the possibilities.
Erasmus+ Traineeship grant in 2022-2023
For the academic year 2022/2023 it will be possible to facilitate UK Erasmus+ traineeships, internships or research projects until (end date) 31 May 2023. Please note that traineeships, internships or research projects with an end date after 31 May 2023 will - from 1 June 2023 onwards - not take place under the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme and its conditions/benefits. This may have consequences for your visa, which the Erasmus+ programme will not be able to account for. Check with your UvA International Office or the UK government website to see how this could impact your stay in the UK.
Erasmus+-grant for UK nationals
As a UK national you can still receive an Erasmus+ grant on Erasmus+ destinations. All UvA students have the same rights to participate in the Erasmus+ Exchange Programme and the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme. Your nationality is of no influence here.
Extra costs because of Brexit
Going on exchange or doing an internship or research project in the UK brings extra costs (visa, insurance etc.). These extra costs will not be covered by the Erasmus+ grant. Covering the additional costs might be possible through other scholarship and grant programmes. Find more information on the page Financial support for your stay abroad.
Preparations for your Erasmus+ stay in the UK
The administrative steps for your Erasmus+ grant will be the same as those for Erasmus+ exchanges to other countries. But now that the UK is not part of the EU anymore, you will be traveling to a non-EU country. Therefore you need to take care of things like you would when traveling to any non-EU country, like visa, insurance, etc.
