In researching psychosis and its recovery, patients’ own experiential knowledge about the condition is becoming increasingly more valued. However, capturing and understanding people’s experiences of psychosis and recovery can be difficult, as the unusual experiences of these individuals might be difficult to translate into words. Therefore, the current study explored the use of drawings as a narrative aid to help express experiences of psychosis and recovery. Participants were asked to make two drawings, one of psychosis and one of recovery. They then participated in phenomenological interviews about their drawings. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, three themes were formulated: about the stories they shared of psychosis and recovery, their reflections on the drawings, and their experiences of the drawing process itself. The findings contribute to efforts by researchers and clinicians to better understand the experiences of people living with psychosis.
