This qualitative master’s thesis on violence against children (VAC) in low- and middle-income countries was conducted in collaboration with the War Child Alliance. Based on 18 key informant interviews with child protection professionals and one focus group discussion, the study explored barriers and facilitators throughout the identification-to-care process for VAC, as well as safe and ethical approaches for community involvement in identification efforts. Data were analyzed thematically. Findings indicate that the identification of VAC, and subsequent child or adolescent disclosure, reporting, or referral to an organization or government service poses the greatest challenges in the process. Safe and ethical community involvement requires consideration of risks and unintended consequences related to safety and well-being, community dynamics, misuse of power, lack of capacity, and relationships with other actors. The participation of communities in developing solutions emerged as a key recommendation to strengthen identification and referral efforts and to build on existing community-based child protection approaches.
