Last modified on 12-05-2025 17:27
The UvA values studying safely online. In pursuit of this, two-step verification (MFA) is being applied to an increasing number of applications. This adds an extra step when logging in.

Here's how two-step verification works

Two-step verification is an extra level of security when logging in. With it, an extra check is made to establish the identity of the person logging in with certainty. In some cases, this requires you to verify your login via your cell phone using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

To access UvA mail, Microsoft 365 and other applications, activate two-step verification once.

Setting up two-step verification

Note: Follow the full instructions from start to finish, this will ensure that it is set up correctly.

  1. Open an incognito window in your browser and go to https://aka.ms/mfasetupExternal link.
  2. You will be taken to a Microsoft sign-in page. Make sure the web address starts with https://login.microsoftonline.com/.External link
  3. Enter your UvA email address.
  4. You will now see a message stating that you are being redirected to the UvA login page.
  5. On the UvA login page (with the UvA logo and an address starting with https://login.uva.nl/), your email address is already filled in. Enter your password and click ‘Sign in’.
  6. A message will appear saying your organization needs more information. Click ‘Next’.
  7. You will now see information about the Microsoft Authenticator app and a link to download it to your phone.
  8. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and open the app.
  9. Allow the app to access your camera and send notifications.
  10. In the app, choose ‘Add account’ and then select ‘Work or school account’.
  11. Choose the option ‘Scan QR code’ and grant camera permission if prompted.
  12. On your computer, click ‘Next’, and then ‘Next’ again to display the QR code. Scan it with your phone.
  13. Your account will now be added to the app. Leave the app open and click ‘Next’ on your computer. A code will appear on screen.
  14. A notification will appear on your phone. Enter the number shown and click ‘Yes’. You will now see that the app has been successfully linked. Click ‘Done’ and close the login activity page.
  15. Everything is set! You have successfully configured two-factor authentication with the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.

Problems with verifying

  1. Are you not getting push notifications on your phone to confirm login? Or are you only getting notifications when the app is already open? Check the app settings on your phone. Make sure notifications are allowed.
  2. If your two-step verification is still not working correctly, go to https://id.student.uva.nl, choose ‘I want to set up my Two-step verification’, log in and choose ‘Reset two-step verification for Microsoft 365’.
  3. Still unable to set up two-step verification and still want to use Microsoft 365 apps? Then ask for a temporary waiver. This is valid for 4 days. Go to https://id.student.uva.nl, choose ‘I want to set up my two-step verification’ and select ‘Request temporary waiver for two-step verification for Microsoft 365’.
