If you're studying full-time, you may be able to apply for student finance. Whether or not you're eligible will depend on your programme, age, nationality and residency status.

What is your study programme?

Student finance consists of a number of components, such as a loan, a student travel product and sometimes a scholarship. You will be required to pay back the loan after you finish your studies. The only non-repayable components are the student travel product and the supplementary grant. See the DUO website for detailed information about student financeExternal link.

Student finance for Dutch students

If you are a Dutch national and studying at the UvA full-time, you can get a loan to help you fund your studies. You must be under the age of 30 when you start receiving this student finance.

Student finance for international students

If you are an international student and under the age of 30, you could be entitled for student finance. Besides your age, the following factors will be taken into consideration: your degree programme, nationality and residency status. See the DUO websiteExternal link for more information.

Where do I apply for student finance?

You can apply for student finance in 3 steps via the DUO website:

  • Request a DigiD with SMS verification (the DigiD is your login code for government websites in the Netherlands). After submitting your request, you will receive a letter within 5 working days containing your login details.
  • Arrange a personal public transport pass. Student finance includes a student travel product (for free or discounted travel). You will need this personal public transport pass for the student travel product.
  • Log into Mijn DUO to apply for student financeExternal link. Carefully read all messages you receive from DUO to ensure you receive the student finance to which you are entitled.

Public transport: the student travel product

The student travel product entitles you to free or discounted travel by train, tram, bus and metro throughout the Netherlands. You can arrange the student travel productExternal link when you apply for student finance. It takes some time to arrange, so do this as soon as you can.

Extra grant for teachers

If you have already completed a higher education programme and now want to do a teacher training programme, you're entitled to one extra year of the performance-related grant in some cases. See the DUO website for information about the requirements to be met. If you're not entitled to student finance (anymore), you may be eligible for a teachers' grant (information in Dutch)External link.
