Many people will endure a betrayal event in their lifetime, yet not everyone develops symptoms from mental disorders.
As defined by Rachman (2010), betrayal is ‘the sense of being harmed by the intentional actions or omissions of a trusted person’. In this study, the emotions of shame, anger, and guilt have been examined in participants describing themselves as suffering from an experience of betrayal. From a cognitive perspective, we argued that people’s interpretation of causality regarding the betrayal event, their causal attributions, could explain differences in symptom severity following betrayal.
