The NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) monitors smoking on educational premises and fines the UvA for any violations. These fines can amount to tens of thousands of euros – money we'd rather invest in your education.
With prominent posters, sidewalk tiles and signs, we're letting people know that the campus is a smoke-free zone. Research shows that most UvA students and staff are aware that smoking around UvA buildings is prohibited. However, some people still ignore the smoking ban. That’s why we’re implementing another creative approach this month, just as we did last February: you really can't miss the ‘signals’ at the Oudemanhuispoort, Roeterseiland Campus and Science Park. Have you noticed the extra signs yet?
If you smoke in an area where it's prohibited, you may receive a warning from a security guard. If necessary, the security guard may write down your details. Please be respectful, don't argue and follow the instructions.
If you see someone smoking on campus, kindly ask them to do so elsewhere. We all share the responsibility for maintaining a smoke-free environment. Enforcing this rule isn’t just up to our security guards. The smoking policy is part of the UvA's house rulesExternal link.
Thank you for your cooperation. We’re counting on you!
