The Netherlands has a shortage of 13,500 primary and secondary school teachers. There's high demand for university-trained teachers in particular, because research shows that the quality of education improves with more academic teachers. With their professional knowledge and investigative attitude, including evidence-based teaching, they help students and schools move forward.
At the UvA, we offer various routes to becoming a teacher. The first-grade teacher training programme falls under the Interfaculty Teacher Training Organisation (ILO) and is offered for 24 school subjects. In addition, the UvA offers several routes to a limited second-degree teaching qualification (a minor in Education and the Educational Module) and several routes for discovering teaching later in your career, such as the track 'Aan de Slag voor de Klas' (getting started in the classroom).
