The demonstration consisted of a group of about 25-45 people, who want the UvA's academic ties with Israel to be severed. The action took place in the hall of REC A. The UvA drew the protesters' attention to the house rules, after which a number of banners with offensive slogans were removed by the protesters and the use of sound amplifiers was stopped. A teach-in took place at 17:00, after which the protesters left voluntarily.
We deeply regret if staff and students were inconvenienced by the demonstration or experienced it as intimidating.
The UvA is making every effort to facilitate dialogue and academic discussion about the war in Gaza. However, we expect this to occur in accordance with the law and the UvA’s Code of Conduct. This includes no face-coverings in public buildings and no slogans or flags that people might find offensive. Read more about this in a recent interview about the protests held with the Rector Magnificus.
