Horizon fund for Humanities students

As student of the faculty of Humanities, you can apply for a grant from the Horizon fund to help you study abroad for academic purposes.

What is your study programme?

The Faculty of Humanities considers it important that students receive international exposure whilst studying, and has therefore created the Horizon fund for this very purpose. The eligibility requirements for a Horizon Fund scholarship are: 

  • You are enrolled at the University of Amsterdam, faculty of Humanities, as full time student.
  • Your trip abroad has a clear academic purpose and is beneficial for your study
  • You have obtained at least 60 EC in higher education (by the time of your departure)
  • You do not receive any grants or funds from the European Union (such as the Erasmus grant) while abroad.
  • You have not made a previous application for the Horizon Fund in the same academic year.

There are three application deadlines per year: 15 January, 15 June and 15 October. Applications should always be submitted in the same academic year in which the foreign study trip will take place.

Below are the destinations and the associated scholarship:

  • Europe: € 200;
  • Middle East, North Africa, Israel, Russia, Türkiye: € 300;
  • USA and Canada: € 400;
  • Asia, Central and Southern Africa, Central and South America: € 500;
  • Australia and New Zealand: € 600.

To apply for the Horizon Fund, fill in the online application form below. Indicate in the form the nature of your stay abroad, the academic component and the added value for your studies. Also attach the following required documents as PDF files:

  • Official transcript of marks, selected by date (via the education administration)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Budget (please use this format from Nuffic (xlsx))

Please note, the form is open:

  • between 15 December and 15 January;
  • between 15 May and 15 June; and 
  • between 15 September and 15 October. 

The final selection will be made by a committee that will assess your application on motivation, added value for study, study progress and extracurricular activities. If you are selected, your scholarship will be paid out upon your return from abroad. Conditions for payment are that you:

  • Submit proof of your stay abroad, such as a statement of host institution (this is provided by the International Office) or a grade list;
  • Submit a report (this may be used anonymously for information purposes).
