The UvA embraces the use of artificial intelligence in education. But they are also cause for concern, for example when it comes toinformation security and privacy.

About ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a chatbot specialised in holding dialogues with humans. ChatGPT generates completely new texts based on artificial intelligence. Users can ask follow-up questions or give further instructions to better tailor its output to their requirements.

Risks when using ChatGPT

AI tools can help you to study more effectively. For instance, you can use ChatGPT to brainstorm. You can also use ChatGPT to check your knowledge when studying for an exam, or to translate a text for you. It can be a convenient assistant that is available at all times. We don’t want to ban the use of AI tools.

ChatGPT may not be used to write assignments you’ll be handing in

As a UvA student, you can expect to receive high-quality and innovative education. At the same time, you must have the intrinsic motivation to learn. Writing your own assignments is part of this, and helps develop the skills you’ll need later on in your studies and on the job market.

The UvA’s fraud and plagiarism regulations state that lecturers must be able to assess a student’s knowledge, insight and skills. We expect students to personally write everything they submit. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the use of AI programs such as ChatGPT is therefore not permitted. Submitting an assignment that you didn’t write yourself may be deemed fraudulent. In cases of fraud, the UvA will take strict action.
