Symposium on Plurisexual, Trans/Gender, and Non-Binary Young Adults and Family Diversity

Are you curious about how family relationships develop, particularly in relation to the desire to have children and decisions around parenthood among plurisexual, trans/gender, and non-binary young adults? Then this symposium — featuring two lectures by international speakers — is perfect for you! Come and listen, and broaden your perspective on diversity in family formation.

Are you a student (bachelor or master) in Child Development and Education or enrolled in the University-based Teacher Training Programme (UPvA): by attending this symposium you can earn a colloquium point.

The lectures will be in English, making the event especially relevant for students in the Master's track Youth at Risk students and in the Research master's Child Development and Education.

Note: This symposium is also open to students from other departments of the University of Amsterdam, as well as to other interested individuals not affiliated with the University of Amsterdam.

Lecture 1: What influences the parenting desires and decisions of LGBTQ+ individuals across different countries?

By: Jorge Gato (Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at Porto University, Portugal)

Despite increasing social acceptance and legal advancements, LGBTQ+ people—particularly those who are plurisexual and trans or gender-diverse—still encounter obstacles when trying to start a family. This lecture presents key findings from a multi-country study that includes Portugal, the UK, Israel, and Poland, focusing on the parenting desires, intentions, and pathways of LGBTQ+ individuals, with particular emphasis on plurisexual and transgender/gender-diverse individuals. We will focus on how culture, gender, and the sex of partners shape their experiences.

Lecture 2: Family Trajectories of Non-Binary Young Adults

By: Prof. Dr. Fiona Tasker (School of Psychological Sciences, Birkbeck University of London, UK)

In the field of Pedagogical Studies, families are often examined at a single point in time. However, family relationships are dynamic—they shift and evolve, sometimes becoming closer and at other times more complex. For LGBTQ+ youth in particular, maintaining family ties can be challenging, especially when these relationships conflict with traditional gender and family expectations. In this lecture, we present findings from a study involving five non-binary young adults (aged 22–30) living in the United Kingdom. We explored their relationships with their families of origin, their current close connections, and their visions for family life in the future. A creative visual family mapping exercise was employed to help bring their experiences to life. Utilizing Elder’s (1998) life course theory—which views family ties as “linked lives”—we illustrate how family connections develop over time, intertwined with personal choices, gender identity, and imagined futures, such as the decision to have children.
