This pilot study evaluates the effectiveness of the Dual Probe Task (DuPT) as an Attentional Bias Modification (AtBM) tool aimed at reducing alcohol-related attentional bias, craving, and consumption. Traditional bias measures like the visual probe and Stroop tasks suffer from poor reliability, which limits their utility in both assessment and intervention. The DuPT, a newer and more psychometrically reliable method, was used to manipulate participants’ attention either toward or away from alcohol-related ads. The DuPT successfully manipulated attentional bias, with participants attending away from alcohol showing significantly reduced attentional bias and lower alcohol craving. However, no significant changes were observed in actual alcohol consumption. Overall, the study supports the validity and feasibility of the DPT as an effective, low-cost intervention tool for altering attentional bias and craving, though further research with larger samples is needed to confirm long-term behavioral effects.
