There has been a rapid increase in vaping popularity and use (Jiang et al., 2019). In the United States, e-cigarettes are the second most popular tobacco product following cigarettes (Birdsey et al., 2023). E-cigarettes contain harmful chemicals including nicotine which is a highly addictive substance. This study explored whether emphasing the importance of forming a clear opinion about vaping would increase resistance to attitude change, based on the Network Theory of Attitudes (Dalege et al., 2018; van der Maas et al., 2020). According to this theory, stronger and more interconnected attitudes are more stable and resistant to change. A 2 (Condition: Importance vs. Control) x 2 (Information Type: Vaping vs Meat Reduction) between-subjects experimental design was conducted. Partcipants first received a message either emphasising the importance of a forming clear opinion on vaping or a control message on meat reduction, followed by an informational paragraph about either vaping or meat reduction. Measures of attitude change, cognitive elaboration and perceived personal importance were collected through self-report measures. Contrary to expectations, no significant main effects or interaction effects were found for attitude change resistance. Analyses exploring the role of cognitive elaboration as a mediator in the relationship between attitude importance and attitude change resistance also yielded no significant results. While the findings did not support the proposed hypotheses, they offer valuable insights for future research on attitude stability and the complexity of attitude change.
