Meat consumption drives environmental degradation, yet

psychological barriers like psychological distance and delay

discounting make dietary shifts difficult. This study tests whether

Episodic Future Thinking (EFT)—a cognitive intervention that

enhances future outcomes’ salience—can reduce meat consumption by

altering delay discounting. We further evaluate the efficacy of AI-EFT

compared to standard EFT and a control. Using a 3x2 betweensubjects

design, participants (N = 156) will complete baseline

measures (eco-anxiety, meat consumption, delay discounting), receive

an intervention, and report delay discounting and food intake weekly

for one month. We hypothesize that EFT will reduce meat

consumption via lower delay discounting, with AI-EFT matching

standard EFT’s effectiveness while requiring less time. Higher baseline

meat consumption and eco-anxiety are expected to increase EFT’s

benefits. Results may offer preliminary insights into how cognitive and

AI-assisted tools can help overcome psychological barriers to

sustainable behavior.
