This study investigates the mechanisms underlying affective memory updating, i.e., shifts in emotional valence of memories, focusing on the role of narrative coherence and prediction error. While prior research has established that memories are malleable, the process by which the emotional tone of episodic memories can change remains unclear. Applying the Modification of Valence in Episodes (MOVIE) paradigm, participants encode, retrieve, and update emotional memories across three consecutive sessions using film-based stimuli. The study tests whether affective updating occurs more when new emotional information is part of a coherent narrative. Through a multilevel mixed-effects model we analyze changes in valence ratings, incorporating individual differences and subjectively perceived narrative coherence. Additionally, a quantitative measure and semi-structured interview data will provide insight into the role of prediction error and subjectively experienced memory change. Findings contribute to the broader understanding of how affective experiences are integrated over time, guiding future expectations.
