Sleep deprivation disrupts cognitive performance, inducing behavioral lapses associated with local sleep — region-specific, sleep-like slow waves that emerge during wakefulness. Local sleep has been linked to reaction time and arousal, but findings are preliminary. Our study investigated local sleep and its impact on reaction time and pupil-linked arousal in sleep-deprived versus well-rested individuals, using an auditory discrimination task.
