Since last year, the UvA has been working on new guidelines allowing for external collaborations to be more extensively assessed. The specific aim of the new guidelines is to prevent the UvA from contributing to human rights violations, misuse of knowledge for unwanted military purposes or serious damage to the environment through educational or research collaborations. The revised framework is expected to be adopted in the course of this academic year. Parallel to that process, the permanent Advisory Committee on Collaboration with Third Parties has issued advice on three specific cases, which were adopted by the Executive BoardExternal link.

During this panel discussion for students and staff of the Faculty of Humanities, the assessment of collaborations with third parties will be discussed, as well as the ethical and security considerations involved. Yvonne Donders, professor of International Human Rights and Cultural Diversity at the Faculty of Law, is involved in the expansion of the framework and will be present to explain the principles and process. The other panel members have experience with such collaborations from different perspectives.

The panel members:

  • Julia Noordegraaf (director AIHR)
  • Robbert Woltering (ARTES)
  • Tim Verlaan (ACUH)
  • Representative FSR (to be announced)

The following questions are addressed:

  1. What does the Committee on Collaboration with Third Parties do? How does the process of assessing the three cases that are currently under review work?
  2. What is the state of affairs regarding the new guidelines?
  3. What are the principles that are used? What can we expect?
  4. What do the panel members expect from the framework, what do they consider important to safeguard?
