Keti Koti at CREA: Listening, sharing and remembering together

Last modified on 17-06-2025 15:07
On 1 July 2025, CREA Amsterdam will organise a collective and connective gathering on the occasion of Keti Koti. With Keti Koti, we commemorate the abolition of slavery. 'Keti koti' means broken chains and refers to the shackles used to secure enslaved people.

On Tuesday 1 July, CREA, UvA Central Diversity Office, Keti Koti table foundation, SuConnect and partners cordially invite you to a special day of remembrance, reflection and encounter during Keti Koti at CREA. This free gathering will focus on the slavery past, the power of stories and the future we are shaping together.

Listening and learning from each other

The programme starts at 11.00 with an in-depth and layered conversation with Maartje Duin and Peggy Bouva, creators of the acclaimed podcast De plantage van onze voorouders. In this series, they explore their families' slavery past, each from a completely different perspective. The conversation is relatable, witty, sometimes confrontational but above all healing and connecting.

Dialogue and connection

After the conversation, we will participate in a Keti Koti Dialogue Table, a ritual meal where space is made for a safe and respectful exchange about the past, its impact on the present and the common path to the future. Besides food, drink and conversation, there will be beautiful music.

Commemoration in Oosterpark

At the end of the programme, there will be an opportunity to join the Bigi Spikri parade towards the Oosterpark. There, the national commemoration and celebration of Keti Koti will take place.
