Doelenzaal, University Library, Singel 425, 1012 WP Amsterdam
Following the recent strike of screenwriters and actors, the Library's FilmclUB will delve into significant moments in the history of the film industry and examine current developments.
UvA historian, Ruud van Dijk, and American director, Allan Arkush (via Zoom), will provide an introduction. This edition will also briefly focus on the Library's film collection. This evening is hosted by the Off-Screen student association.
Not everything in Hollywood is glitter and glamour. The film industry can quickly turn someone into a celebrity, but when sales decline, yesterday's star is forgotten today. No one had a sharper eye for this than director Billy Wilder, whose 'Sunset Boulevard' is still considered one of the sharpest portraits of the film industry.
The FilmclUB is an edition of the ClUB, an interdisciplinary gathering in various forms where thoughts are exchanged through literature, drama, film, music, and other works. The ClUB is organized by a study association, student initiative, or individual student, and typically, an expert is present to provide substantive or in-depth explanations.
On the website of the Library you can find all the opening hours.
