The protesters have united under the name AUFP. Among other things, they demand that the UvA and VU speak out about the situation in Gaza, and that all ties with Israeli institutions be severed.
"We certainly want to be a place where we don't shy away from discussions," said Peter van Tienderen, dean of the Faculty of Science. "But the way this demonstration went is unacceptable. Protesters pulled open doors where exams were being held at the time, disrupting the primary educational process. In addition, several protesters had their faces covered, which some felt was intimidating."
"The images we are shown every day show that a humanitarian disaster is taking place in the area. It is impossible not to be personally affected by that. But here on campus, everyone should feel safe to work or study," van Tienderen stressed. "Respect for each other is essential for that."
Feeling safe at the UvA is important. See where you can turn when you don't.
