Before starting the minor
Where do I find the entry requirements for the minor programmes?
In the UvA Course Catalogue you can find the specific entry requirements for the minor programme, see ‘Registration and entry requirements’ under 'Enrolment and Admission' in the index on the left.
Is it possible to take extra courses (electives) during my minor?
Yes, it is possible to take extra courses as long as you meet the entry requirements and have a valid course registration. Please check if you meet the entry requirements of the course in the UvA Course Catalogue. Additionally, you are limited to registering for a maximum of 42 EC of Economics and Business courses each semester.
Is it possible to request an exemption within my minor programme?
No, it is not possible to request an exemption within your minor programme. In some cases, however, it is possible to change a mandatory course for another course. In this case you will have to demonstrate that you already have obtained the required knowledge of the course during your Bachelor’s programme. Please contact the Education Desk if you would like to adjust your minor programme.
Is it possible to take a minor outside of the UvA?
It's possible to take a minor outsite of the UvA. The minor has to be approved by the Board of Examiners. Check the webpage about Study programme - minor or semester abroad for the approval form (also for a minor from another Dutch university).
Is it possible to take a minor during my Master’s?
It is not permitted to take minor courses when you are enrolled in a Master’s programme, unless you are taking courses via Contract Education. This is not possible for the Amsterdam Data Science minor.
I am currently not enrolled in a programme, can I still take a minor?
If you are not enrolled in a programme, you can only take a minor via Contract Education. This is not possible for the Amsterdam Data Science minor.
I already passed all my Bachelor’s courses. Is it still possible for me to take a minor?
In order to be able to take a minor, you need to be enrolled in either a Bachelor’s programme at UvA or a Bachelor’s programme at another university.
During the minor
Is it possible to change my minor programme?
Yes, in certain cases it is possible to make changes in your minor programme, for example if you want to change electives. Please note: it is only possible to change electives when the course registration is still open.
In the email you received from the Economics and Business Student Administration about your admission to the minor programme you will find a link. Please use this link to apply for a change in your elective courses.
The Student Administration then contacts the minor coordinator, who will determine if you are allowed to change your programme. Afterwards you will receive an email from about the approval of the changes.
If you cannot find the email about your admission, then use the Digital Student Service Desk to apply for a change in your minor programme.
What should I do if a course from my approved minor programme is no longer offered?
Please contact the Education Desk for more information about the courses you can take instead.
How long does my registration for the minor programme remain valid?
Admission to the minor programme is valid for three years from the first 1 September after the date of admission. If you have not concluded the programme after three years you will need to apply again and submit your request via the online question form.
After completing the minor
Can I proceed to a Master’s programme after I have finished my transition minor?
Not all transition minors provide an unconditional admission to the Master’s programme. You can find more information about proceeding to a Master’s programme on the websites of the corresponding Master’s programme. Please contact the Admissions Office if you have any further questions about proceeding to a Master's programme after finishing the minor.
Is it possible to include extra courses on the minor certificate?
No, the minor certificate only shows courses from your approved minor programme (30 or 60 EC). It is, however, possible to request a certified transcript of all passed courses.
Is it possible to request a minor certificate if I did not pass all the courses of my minor programme?
No, a minor certificate is only provided if you passed all courses of the programme. It is, however, possible to request a certified transcript of all passed courses before you have finished the minor via the Digital Student Service Desk.
For UvA Economics and Business Bachelor’s students: may I include my minor as an extracurricular component on my degree certificate, if it is not part of my study programme?
You are allowed to include a minor as an extracurricular component on the degree certificate supplement. Extra curricular courses do not count towards the GPA. Just like the approval for your minor in the compulsory part of your study programme, you do not need to request approval if it concerns a UvA minor, as long as the minor does not show overlap with other courses in the study programme. However, if it concerns a minor from another university, students do need to get approval from the Board of Examiners in order to include the minor on the degree certificate. For more information, contact the Education Desk.
