Travel grant from the UvA Fund
The travel grant is a contribution towards the total costs of your international experience. The grants range from €2,500 to €5,000 (up to €10,000 in exceptional cases).
Who is eligible?
You can apply for a travel grant if:
- You are going abroad for an exchange, research, internship or fieldwork as part of your UvA degree programme and will earn credits for this. Attending conferences is in principle excluded.
- You and your parents/guardians do not have sufficient means to cover the costs of your stay abroad. For this, you will need a recommendation from a student counsellor (see below).
- This will be your first academic experience abroad. This means that students from abroad (who are already gaining international experience by studying at the UvA) are excluded from applying, with the exception of refugees.
Discuss your application with a student counselor
The travel grant is only available to a very limited number of students. For an initial indication of whether you might be eligible, contact a student counselor. Be sure to do this well in advance. It may take a few weeks before an appointment becomes available.
- TThe student counsellor will assess whether you are entitled to a supplementary grant from DUO and whether you have used up your entitlement to student finance, including your right to borrow. The student counsellor may ask you to provide evidence.
- Together with a student counsellor you will complete an advice form (docx) clearly demonstrating that there is a financial shortfall that cannot be bridged without a travel grant.
Preparing your application
Once the advice form has been completed, you can prepare all the other attachments (as PDF files):
- a motivation letter
- a recent CV
- an overview of your academic results
- a letter of recommendation: this is a personal, tailored letter from a tutor, lecturer, study adviser or other UvA staff member. The letter must be signed and printed on UvA letterhead or sent from the staff member’s UvA email address
- a completed advice form including a recommendation from a student counsellor, clearly demonstrating that there is a financial shortfall that cannot be bridged without a travel grant
- an itemised budget (only required if the advice form does not already include a sufficiently detailed budget)
- proof of admission from the university, institution or organisation you will be visiting, or a document showing that you will be admitted
Deadlines
There is an application round approximately every three months, each with its own deadline for submitting your application. Submit your application by:
- 1 September 2026 (if you will depart from November 2026)
- 1 November 2026 (if you will depart from January 2027)
- 8 January 2026 (if you will depart from February 2027)
- 1 March 2027 (if you will depart from May 2027)
You will be informed of the outcome within 2 to 3 weeks after the deadline.
Submit your application
Do you have the advice form and attachments ready? Then you can submit your application. Both the form and the attachments may be submitted in either Dutch or English.
Payment
If a travel grant is awarded, payment will be made once we have received proof of your departure in the form of your travel ticket. We will provide more information about this in the award letter.
Final report
After your trip you are required to submit a final report via the application system. You can read more about this in the award letter.
