The Netherland-America Foundation Study Abroad Fund

Grants of up to $5,000 are available for students who require financial support in order to pursue their dream of studying in the United States. If you’re interested and eligible to apply, please contact the International Office of your faculty.
Eligibility
- You are going abroad to the United States for an exchange, research, internship or fieldwork as part of your UvA studies (Bachelor’s or Master’s). You'll therefore be earning credits.
- Without financial support, this experience abroad would be impossible because you and your parents/guardians have insufficient resources to cover the costs. To meet this requirement, you'll need to demonstrate that you're receiving a supplementary grant ('aanvullende beurs') from DUO.
- It will be your first study experience abroad.
Conditions
Checks that are part of the assessment include: whether you are entitled to a supplementary grant ('aanvullende beurs') from DUO; whether you've used up your right to student financing including loan rights; whether there are other circumstances that make financial support necessary.
The available budget determines the amount of the awards and whether awards can be made. The amount awarded per student is no more than $5,000.
Deadlines
Departure date* | Deadline to apply |
First semester | 1 April |
Second semester | 1 October |
* By 'departure date' we mean the actual date you will be travelling to your foreign destination.
How to apply
An application can be requested from your faculty's International Office. If you've been placed at an American university for your semester abroad (exchange) you'll be sent the application form by email.
After the application deadline, we will assess applications and invite selected applicants to a Zoom interview with our selection committee. We aim to communicate the result within 1 month of the application deadline.
Application checklist
Submit your application in English, together with all the required documents (PDF files only), through the application form. These are the documents to include:
- A recent CV
- An overview of your study results
- The official 'selected' letter you received from the UvA after the selection. A proof of admission from the university, institution or organisation welcoming you, or a document showing that you will be admitted, will be requested by NAF at a later stage.
- A screenshot or letter from DUO detailing the financial support you receive from DUO, including the supplementary grant (required in order to be eligible for this grant).
You'll also be asked to complete a budget and provide some background information:
- Describe why you need funding for this exchange. For example, do you have money saved up? Can your parents/guardians assist with costs? Feel free to elaborate on your family's background and add any context that is relevant.
- Tell us about yourself and your goals. Why are you motivated to study in the United States? How will this help your future plans? Share anything that's relevant to why you want to study in the US.
Upon your return
Within a month of returning home, reflect on your experience abroad and submit this to us via Submittable, the application platform that hosts your application. This helps us to evaluate the programme and to promote it using any relevant quotes or photos you provide. The report should take 10 minutes to complete. You'll receive an email towards the end of your exchange asking you to complete it.
