Free downloadable software for UvA students

As a UvA student you can install ArcGIS software on your own computer.

When maps are used to make decisions that save money, time or even lives, then you need to put science to work for you. ArcGIS can be used to build maps with up-to-date data, to combine them with deep analysis and to share them.

Specific system requirements are needed to use ArcGIS. Check the website of ArcGISExternal link to see if your computer is suitable.

Installing ArcGIS on your own computer 

There is a short manual to help you install ArcGIS on your own computer. The lecturer of the course for which you need ArcGIS will give you an activation code for using ArcGIS.

Atlas.Ti is software for qualitative data analysis and research. You can download the software after you have created and activated an account with the license code.

Request the license code

Request a license code for the Atlas.Ti software via this linkExternal link. You will then receive an email with the license code and a link to the Atlas.Ti website. Only with the license code you can use the software. You may not make this license code available to anyone else in any way. If you do so, you endanger the use of Atlas.ti within the UvA and by your fellow students.

Create an account through the Atlas.Ti website and enter the license code obtained.
Note: Please create an account with your UvA email address (firstname.lastname@student.uva.nl, not your student number). All other email addresses will be removed from the license.

Download version 9

To use Atlas.Ti you must first download version 9 of the software. The license code does not work on Atlas.Ti version 8.

So to use the software you have to follow these steps:

• Create an account with the link you receive with the license code
• Log in and select the license
• After login you can download the software version 9.

As a UvA student, you can use the Coach 7 software package on your own computer or on the Science Park study centre computers.

Coach 7 Home is a student version of the complete Coach 7 software package. UvA students can install Coach 7 Home on their own computer in order to get started and become acquainted with the Coach 7 software package.

Coach 7 is a package intended for use on a Windows platform.

Installing Coach 7 on your own computer

A brief manual is available to help you install Coach 7 Home on your own computer. The lecturer of the course for which you need Coach 7 will provide you with the activation code you require to use Coach 7.

UvA students can use the Mathematica software package both at home and in the study rooms.

Use at home

To use Mathematica at home, you must register first.

Registration

• Name
• Email address: fill in your @student.uva.nl email address here. Any other email addresses will not work.
• Organisation: University of Amsterdam
• Department: the Faculty or institute where you are studying

Use the 'Registration' link to register and request a licence. This link can be found in the References section.

Wolfram has made an installation manual available.

Mathematica registration is updated annually in July; you will be provided a new password every year. See the installation manual for instructions.

No support is provided for the home installation of Mathematica.

MathWorks’ Matlab is a programme for numerical calculations, visualisation and programming. You can use Matlab to analyse data, develop algorithms and create models and applications. You can download the software through Surfconext and the MathWorks portal. 

Start working with Mathlab 

• Go to the MathWorks portalExternal link and use your UvAnetID login.
• MathWorks will ask you to create an account. Please use your UvAmail (not your personal mail) to sign up and choose a safe password (different from your UvAnetID). You will need the password when installing the software.
• Hit the button ‘Get Matlab and Simulink’. 
• Follow the next steps and accept the Online Services Agreement.  
• Activate your MathWorks account through the mail and start the installation of Matlab and Simulink. It will take you approximately 10 minutes. 

Please note! The MathWorks account enables you to store files in the MathWorks Drive. We discourage the use of MathWorks Drive because of privacy reasons. Instead please use UvA storage services. 

Extending your Matlab license

Your Matlab license is valid for one year. Upon the expiration date you will receive a message. Should you want to keep using Matlab you can confirm your status as a student and continue working for another year.
