For destinations within the Erasmus+ programme, check the UvA World Map (choose 'Exchange', select your study programme and then, under 'Select a programme', choose 'Erasmus').

How to apply

You are automatically enrolled in the Erasmus+ Grant by enrolling in an exchange programme at another European university. More information on how to apply for an exchange can be found on the Application page. You will be further informed by the Erasmus+ department after the draw.

Erasmus+ Exchange Grant

As an Erasmus+ student, you are eligible for an Erasmus+ Exchange grant that allows you to cover extra living and travel costs during your stay abroad. The grant amount is determined annually by NufficExternal link. You are only eligible for the Erasmus+ Exchange grant if you have been selected by your faculty for a place at a foreign university. Students selected for this by their faculty will automatically be nominated for an Erasmus+ Exchange grant by the UvA's Central Erasmus Office.

The general scholarship amount is set annually by the European Commission and the national agency in the Netherlands, Nuffic, and is linked to the country of destination.

Maximum amount available*
Destination
  • €390 per month (€13 per day)
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden
  • €330 per month (€11 per day)
Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey

* Grant amounts are determined after all applications have been received. The awarded Erasmus+ budget allocation for 2025–2026 is not sufficient to provide all Erasmus+ students with a full grant for the entire duration of their study abroad period. As a result, selected students will receive a grant for 60% of their total study period. The remaining 40% will count as ‘zero-grant days’: students will retain their Erasmus+ status, but will not receive funding for those days. The (green) travel grant remains unchanged.

Available top-ups

If you receive an Erasmus+ grant, you may also be eligible for the green travel top-up or the inclusion top-up. The green travel top-up, consisting of additional compensation based on your travel distance and a maximum of additional scholarship days, is available if you use an environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transport for your trip to the host country. The inclusion top-up is available if you experience an economic barrier or one or more barriers falling under disability or health problems. More information is available on Canvas after you are selected for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunities top-up

There is a specific extra grant for students studying abroad with a disability or health issues called the Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunities top-up (also known as Inclusion top-up). This means that if you are awarded the Erasmus+ grant, you can request an additional €250 monthly for periods abroad lasting longer than a month. The Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunities top-up can also be requested if you are facing financial barriers, but it is not possible to apply for the top-up for both reasons at once. More information, including application procedure details, is available on Canvas after you've been selected for an Erasmus+ exchange.

In addition to the Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunities top-up, it is also possible to apply for the Inclusion Support. This additional financial support can be combined with the Erasmus+ Fewer Opportunities top-up and is meant specifically to cover additional costs (such as guidance, special study material or travel requirements) during the experience abroad which are not compensated in any other way (e.g. by health insurance or travel insurance). It is important to keep in mind that the application for Inclusion support must be filed with the Central Erasmus Office (erasmus-sts@uva.nlExternal link) at least 8 weeks before the start date of your mobility. Your application will be forwarded to the National Agency (Nuffic) for approval and this can take time.

After graduation

The Erasmus+ programme does not support study exchanges after graduation. However, it is possible to do a work related internship abroad with an Erasmus+ Traineeship grant after you graduate.

How the Erasmus+ programme came about

The Erasmus+ study programme is an initiative of the European Union to improve exchanges between universities in the European Union and promote cooperation in higher education. The European Commission funds these exchanges. All UvA programmes participate in the European Erasmus+ programme. The individual study programmes have concluded student exchange agreements with partner universities in European member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway and Türkiye.

More information on where Erasmus stands on inclusion, citizenship, the environment, partnerships, mentoring and support can be found in the Erasmus Charter and the Erasmus Policy Statement.
