Grant awards of up to $5,000 are intended for students who need financial support so they may pursue their dream of studying in the United States. If you’re interested and eligible to apply, please contact the International Office of your faculty.

For whom

  1. You are going abroad to the United States for an exchange, research, internship or fieldwork as part of your UvA studies (Bachelor’s or Master’s) and thus earn credits.
  2. Without financial support, the experience abroad would not be possible for you, because you and your parents/guardians do not have sufficient resources to cover the costs. You will need to show proof of receiving a supplementary grant ('aanvullende beurs') from DUO to meet this requirement.
  3. First study experience abroad.

These are the conditions

Checks that are part of the assessment include whether you are entitled to a supplementary grant ('aanvullende beurs') from DUO, whether you have used up your right to student financing including loan rights, and/or whether there are other circumstances that make financial support necessary.

The available budget determines the amount of the awards and whether awards can be made. The amount awarded per student is $5,000.

Apply

An application can be requested at the International Office of your faculty. Students who are placed at a US university for a semester exchange will also be contacted through email with the application form.

After the application deadline, we will assess applications and invite select applicants to an interview with our selection committee via Zoom. We aim to provide results within one month of the application deadline.

Checklist for your application

Submit the application with all documents (PDF files only) via the application form. Please submit your application in English. These are the documents to include for your application:

  • A recent CV
  • An overview of your study results
  • Proof of admission from the university/institution/organization welcoming you, or a document showing that you will be admitted
  • A screenshot or letter from DUO detailing the financial support you receive from DUO, including the supplementary grant, which is required to receive in order to be eligible for this grant

In the application, you will also be asked to provide some background on yourself, complete a budget, and answer the following questions:

  1. Describe why you need funding for this exchange. For example, do you have money saved up? Can your parents/guardians assist with costs? Feel free to elaborate on your family's background and add any context that is relevant.
  2. Tell us about yourself and your goals. Why are you motivated to study in the United States? How will this help your future plans? Share anything that is relevant to your reason for wanting to study in the US.

Upon your return

Within a month of returning home, we would like to receive a reflection of your experience in Submittable, the application platform that hosts your application. This will be used to evaluate this program moving forward and also promote the program using any relevant quotes/photos you provide. The report should take 10 minutes to complete and you will receive an email near your study end date to complete it.
