UvA is switching to LED ligthing

From the end of May, we will gradually replace the current fluorescent tubes with energy-efficient LED lighting in the Oost-Indisch Huis and the Bushuis. This is part of a larger plan: in the coming years, all UvA buildings will be equipped with LED lighting.

Work in the Oost-Indisch Huis and Bushuis will start first. The entire process for all university buildings will probably continue until 2030.

More sustainable, better quality light and useful data

The UvA is switching to LED lighting to use less energy and thus reduce CO₂ emissions. LED lights are more energy-efficient and last longer. In addition, the UvA will increasingly use motion sensors: the lights will automatically switch on when you enter and off when a room is not in use for a longer period of time.

Besides the energy savings, the data from the motion sensors will give us better insight into how our spaces are used, allowing us to organise and manage our buildings more efficiently.

The new lighting is of better quality, which makes for a more pleasant environment to work and study in. The lights and old fixtures (the parts that hold the lamps) will be recycled so that materials are reused as much as possible.

What will you notice as a student or staff member?

During the replacement of the lighting, the rooms will be temporarily inaccessible. This will be indicated on site at the relevant room.

The work in the Oost-Indisch Huis and Bushuis will take place from the end of May and is expected to be completed by the end of September. For most rooms, the work will not take longer than one morning or afternoon. Larger rooms may take more time. As much as possible, the schedule will take teaching times into account and we will try to minimise any inconvenience.

Once the lighting has been replaced, you will notice that it has a different colour and intensity. This complies with current laws and regulations and is tailored to pleasant and safe use. In most rooms, the lighting will now switch on automatically when there is movement and switch off again after an extended period of inactivity. In lecture halls, manual control will remain possible.
