Teaching and research: results in a turbulent year

Through its research and teaching, the UvA contributes to solutions to major challenges in areas such as sustainability, digitalisation, health and societal resilience. Across disciplinary boundaries, researchers, lecturers and students work together with external partners on new knowledge and applications. In 2025, once again, thousands of students successfully completed their degree programmes and new students enrolled. The quality of teaching was confirmed by the positive assessment from the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) in the Institutional Quality Assurance Review, underlining that the UvA continues to develop its degree programmes with care and with a focus on the future.

Different perspectives in a tense world

In a context of geopolitical tensions and rapid technological developments, the role of universities is more urgent than ever. This also applies within our own community. International conflicts, such as in the Middle East, left their mark on the UvA in 2025, resulting in tensions, demonstrations and heated debates. The university faces the challenge of providing space for different perspectives while at the same time safeguarding a safe and inclusive environment for students and staff.

Connection and dialogue within the community

In 2025, intensive work was carried out on a new strategy for the UvA, in cooperation with faculties, service departments, students and staff. Experiences with, among other things, workload, social safety, sustainability, digitalisation and finances formed important building blocks. In 2026, this strategy will be further elaborated and translated into concrete choices and actions.

At the same time, connection and dialogue remain key priorities. Students, staff and partners are actively seeking ways to stay in dialogue with one another, including through the dialogue network and student initiatives such as the ‘Vrijplaats voor Verschil’, which strengthen open conversation. In this way, the UvA community is building not only knowledge, but also the way in which we live and work together within the university.

Financial result 2025

Financially, the UvA closed 2025 with a positive result of almost 36 million euros, instead of the previously budgeted small deficit. This is partly due to one-off windfalls and restraint in expenditure. In the coming period, the university will focus on deploying its resources in a targeted way, so that they are used where they are most needed: for high-quality teaching, strong research, reducing workload, talent development and a sustainable, future-proof university.
