'Together, we achieve more': UvA launches new multi-year strategy

Published on 31-08-2026 17:00
The UvA has launched its strategy for 2027–2032. Four overarching ambitions set the direction for the university and its academic community. The strategy was developed through extensive discussions with students, staff and participation bodies, as well as with people outside the UvA.

‘The key word in our strategy is “together”. It is no coincidence that its title is "Together, we achieve more",' says Vinod Subramaniam, president of the Executive Board. ‘Our strength lies precisely in the wealth of perspectives, experiences and talent we bring together. This strategy really belongs to all of us.’

Core values and ambitions

Engaged, curious and independent-minded – these are the UvA’s core values as set out in the strategy. The four strategic ambitions provide a compass for education, research, societal impact and the way we work and study together as an organisation: ‘we are a great place to work and study’, ‘we are a recognised and valued knowledge partner’, ‘we make a societal impact through world-class research’ and ‘we develop and value all talent’. These ambitions are translated in the strategy document into nine concrete priorities for the years ahead.

Work together, open up

‘A compass is only valuable if you use it,’ Subramaniam emphasises. ‘You have to keep checking your course along the way: are we still on the right track? Are we overlooking anything? And above all: who can we learn from? For us as the UvA, that means, above all, listening better – to each other and to the world around us.’

One message came up time and again in the strategy discussions with people and organisations outside the UvA: don’t be an island; reach out to us and let's work together! Subramaniam: ‘I would like to repeat that call here: open up, together we achieve more.’
