Think of others: the UvA campus is smoke-free

Published on 02-02-2026
As you walk into a building, you pass through a cloud of smoke. Sound familiar? Not exactly a fresh start to your day. The smell of cigarette smoke lingers and, for many students, it’s bothersome and unpleasant.

Everyone should feel comfortable and welcome at the UvA. That's why we ask smokers to smoke outside UvA grounds. This helps ensure that everyone can study, work and move around without being affected by smoke.

Why we keep emphasising this

The UvA has been smoke-free since 2020, in line with Dutch law. We communicate this clearly through signs, posters, narrowcasting and Instagram. But we’ve noticed that people are still smoking on campus, and we’ve heard that it bothers others.

That's why we’re continuing to raise awareness that our campuses are smoke-free areas. Ultimately, it’s about how we treat one another and about being mindful of each other’s health and comfort.

What you can do

Do you smoke? Please be mindful of the people around you and leave the campus to smoke. Have you seen someone smoking on campus? A friendly reminder can help. Have you been approached about your smoking? Treat the other person with respect and remember that smoking on campus is not allowed.

Thank you for your cooperation and for being considerate of one another.
