Think of each other: the UvA campus is smoke-free

Published on 31-08-2026 09:05
At the UvA, we share the same campus to study, work and meet each other. It is important that everyone feels welcome and comfortable. When people smoke on campus, the smell of cigarette smoke lingers, for example along walkways and at entrances. Many students and staff members find this unpleasant.

In addition, smoking on educational premises is not permitted by law. By not smoking on UvA premises, you contribute to a healthy, smoke-free environment for everyone and show that we think of each other.

Why we keep emphasising this

The UvA has been smoke-free since 2020, in line with Dutch law. We communicate this through signs, posters, narrowcasting and social media. But we’ve noticed that people are still smoking on campus, and we’ve heard that it bothers others.

That’s why we continue to draw attention to the fact that our campuses are smoke-free. Ultimately, it’s about how we treat one another and about being mindful of each other’s health and comfort.

What you can do

Do you smoke? Please consider the people around you and leave the campus to smoke. Have you seen someone smoking on campus? A friendly reminder can help. Have you been approached about your smoking? Treat the other person with respect and remember that smoking on campus is not allowed.

Thank you for your cooperation and for being considerate of one another.
