Due to serious security vulnerabilities in PHP, many websites and services of the University of Amsterdam are being temporarily taken offline as a precaution. As a result, some websites and online services may be temporarily unavailable. This measure is intended to protect systems and data.

Rooster.uva.nl is not affected by this measure and will remain available. Exams will also be unaffected and will go ahead as scheduled.

Why are services being taken offline?

PHP is a programming language used by many websites. Two serious vulnerabilities have been discovered in it. Attackers could potentially exploit these vulnerabilities to gain unauthorised access to systems and run their own code.

The PHP security vulnerability is having a significant impact across the Netherlands. Other organisations, including DigiD, MijnOverheid and the House of Representatives, are also taking websites and systems offline as a precaution.

What does this mean for you?

You may experience temporary disruption when visiting UvA websites or using its services. Taking these services offline is a precautionary measure and does not mean that a website has been hacked or that any data has been leaked.

At present, we cannot yet say when all affected websites will be available again. Websites can only be safely brought back online once the necessary security measures have been implemented.
