New food and beverage offerings: more local, more choice, more convenience
The current contract with CIRFOOD expires at the end of December 2026. The UvA is using this opportunity to better align its offerings with what students and staff value: affordable, sustainable, and inviting places to eat, drink, and socialize.
Local businesses on campus
A mix of local food and beverage businesses will be given space on the campuses. These include espresso bars, food trucks, cafés, and food courts serving hot meals. At locations where a standalone food and beverage outlet isn’t feasible, alternatives will be provided, such as vending machines with fresh products.
The bidding process is nearly complete. It is expected that the names of the entrepreneurs who will be opening at the various locations will be announced in October. They will initially receive a one-year contract, with the option to renew it. This ensures that the offerings can continue to align with new ideas, trends, and the needs of the campus.
CIRFOOD takes on a new role
CIRFOOD will cease to serve as the primary caterer as of December 31, 2026. However, the company will remain involved as a coordinating partner starting January 1, 2027, following the award of this contract through a competitive bidding process. CIRFOOD will oversee the various foodservice partners and ensure the quality and consistency of the overall offering. The company will also support business owners in their day-to-day operations and their continued development. For catering at meetings, gatherings, and events, a separate pool of six to eight regular suppliers will be established. The selection process is expected to be completed by the end of December.
Easier ordering, smarter food management
Ordering and payment will also become simpler. Through a digital platform, an app, and information screens, you’ll soon be able to see what’s available at your location. Smart cash registers will also be installed at a number of locations. The platform also provides opportunities for campaigns and initiatives that help reduce food waste.
Renovations at the locations
To make the new concepts possible, kitchens and facilities at many locations will be modified. The renovations will primarily take place in December 2026 and January 2027, during periods with minimal academic activity whenever possible. If a dining facility needs to close temporarily, Facility Services will work with the relevant faculty or department to provide a suitable temporary solution.
In the coming months, we’ll share more about the operators, the offerings at each location, and the work schedule.
