Mesut on the U21 Student Challenge: "Taking part was a spontaneous decision"

Published on 26-03-2026
Healthy aging in the context of climate change. That was the theme of the online U21 Student Challenge held last May. Second-year medical student Mesut was one of the participants from the UvA. "Taking part was a spontaneous decision. I especially liked being part of an international challenge," says Mesut.

Mesut was part of a research group with students from Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and England. "It was an interdisciplinary group: from medicine and dentistry to physiotherapy and health sciences. Our research question was how older people can stay healthy for as long as possible in a time of climate change. Because of the time differences, we shared our ideas via WhatsApp."

More greenery good for mental health and climate

"Healthy ageing is not only about medical care, but also about staying active, social contacts and a sense of purpose," Mesut continues. "Elderly people sometimes seem to live isolated in care homes. One possible solution is the creation of parks. Parks function as meeting places and foster social interaction. Walking paths invite older people to keep moving. Trees and climbing plants provide shade and protection from the sun, which is important for the elderly as they are often sensitive to heat. But more greenery in care homes and buildings can also contribute to quality of life and positive mental health."

"As students, we currently belong to the younger generation, but we are the elderly of the future. By investing in nature restoration projects now and involving older people in climate plans, we will benefit from this ourselves as the future elderly," Mesut explains.

Collaborating with students around the world

Mesut looks back fondly on his participation in the U21 Student Challenge. "It is a serious challenge that requires you to set aside the necessary time. That requires discipline," Mesut laughs. "There are also real expectations: you have to provide input and keep agreements. It comes down to responsibility and time management. Good communication is also important. It is not often that you work together with students from all over the world. That was a special experience."
