Algemeen Platform Humaniora Amsterdam (ALPHA)External link is the faculty association for study associations and magazines of the Faculty of Humanities. ALPHA encourages mutual cooperation between student associations and magazines and supports its members with a financial contribution. ALPHA is therefore the link between the UvA and the associations and magazines. 

General Council meetings and magazine meetings take place several times a year, with the emphasis on the distribution of subsidies. In addition, the board organises activities where the boards from the Faculty of Humanities can get to know each other better and ALPHA has the privilege of organising a New Year’s gala for all Humanities students.

Have you experienced a board year before and are you afraid ALPHA will take up a lot of time? No need to worry, because besides the mandatory meetings (only about 4 a year) and a weekly board meeting, you will only need about an hour a week for you own individual tasks according to your position within the board.

Roles

Chair

As the chair of ALPHA, you are responsible for overseeing the board, ensuring smooth running of the organization and checking that everything is getting done. You coordinate the board’s activities, oversee the yearly planning, set the agendas for meetings and support your board in their roles. You also lead the general council meetings (ARVs) and general member’s meetings (ALVs), as well as coordinate internal communication with your secretary.

Secretary

As the secretary of ALPHA, you are responsible for overseeing email communication, writing minutes of meetings, ALV’s and ARV’s, handling social media and updating the website. This usually makes you the first point of contact with our members and other external parties, but also gives you an important informative role in the association, as you collaborate on internal communication with your chair to make sure your members have all the necessary information.

Treasurer

As the Treasurer of ALPHA, you are responsible for maintaining the bank account, making the financial plan at the beginning and the realisation at the end of the year, and dividing the subsidies for the study associations and magazines. You explain the rules and make the forms regarding the subsidies and make sure they are being reviewed professionally and objectively. You are in contact with the financial committee (kascommissie) and the UvA about money-related business.

External

As the External of ALPHA, you are responsible for the partnerships and events of ALPHA. This includes contact with external partners, such as Flixbus, as well as coordinating the planning of events such as the gala, humanities after dark and borrels after meetings. This is perhaps the most flexible role on the board, as you are free to look for exciting new collaborations for humanities and help plan amazing events for ALPHA!
