Dialogue at the UvA: participate, organise and facilitate
What is dialogue?
Dialogue is fundamentally different from debating or discussing. It is not about winning or proving you are right, but about thinking together, listening and seeking understanding. Debate, discussion and dialogue each have their own value and can co-exist. In the UvA’s dialogue network we consciously focus on dialogue: creating space to better understand one another, even if you do not reach agreement.
On Monday, 30 March, ‘Platform for Different Perspectives’ (Vrijplaats voor Verschil) took place—an example of a dialogue session made possible in part by the dialogue network. You can read an extensive recap on the Folia website.
Want to organise a dialogue yourself? The dialogue network can help
Are you a UvA student or member of staff? You can organise a dialogue in your programme, within your team, in a study association or around a social issue. The dialogue network offers substantive, practical and financial support.
At uva.nl/dialoog you will find:
- a self-check: is dialogue the right format for your issue?
- ground rules for a safe and careful dialogue
- the option to request tailored advice, including financial support
What support is available?
Would you like to organise a session and need help? Contact the dialogue network; we will be happy to think along with you about the format, approach and practicalities.
You can make use of:
- Tailored advice from a member of the dialogue network with expertise in dialogue.
- An independent facilitator (internally trained UvA staff).
- A financial contribution, for example to cover room hire.
Already have a concrete topic or idea? Complete the form at uva.nl/dialoog and we will contact you within a few days.
Theoretical framework for dialogue
To clearly describe what the UvA does and does not understand by ‘dialogue’, we developed a theoretical framework together with Judith van den Boogert (mediator, dialogue facilitator and UvA lecturer). Would you like to receive this theoretical framework before submitting a request or organising a session? Email dialoog@uva.nl.
