De Nieuwe Mensa celebrates its first anniversary!

De Nieuwe Mensa celebrates its first anniversary!

What started as the ‘Anti-Canteen’, a critical student initiative challenging the food and drink on campus, has grown into De Nieuwe Mensa: a popular and vibrant spot on the Roeterseiland Campus. For a full year, students have been able to enjoy affordable, mostly vegan meals. A milestone worth celebrating. We look back with UvA student, founder and board member Chris Cleef.

Chris reflects positively: “What surprised me most was how much support we received. At first, it was a bit scary – after all, we were initially against the canteen. But we received a lot of help to make this possible.”

Facility Services, together with Cirfood, played an important role in launching and developing De Nieuwe Mensa. Chris explains: “It takes time to get everyone up to speed, to understand the cleaning and waste schedules and all those practical things. In the beginning, we were often still cooking right up to closing time at six or seven in the evening. Now we usually finish cooking in the afternoon. Facility Services and Cirfood have been incredibly patient and supportive throughout.”

Finding solutions and continuous improvement

Not everything worked smoothly from day one. The self-service concept in the first week led to long queues at peak times. With help from Facility Services, the food stand was moved one spot back to keep the walkways clear.

“We also added an extra shift during peak hours and made a clear schedule for the chefs, so they could fully focus on serving meals. Things run much more smoothly now.”

Growth in organisation and on the menu

A lot has changed in the first year. “In the beginning everything was new. None of us had ever done something like this before. Now, a year later, we have a routine and know what to do if something goes wrong. That makes things much more relaxed.”

The menu has grown as well: “Before the summer, we offered five dishes per week. Once we realised there was a regular group of students coming to eat at De Nieuwe Mensa, it gave us the confidence to expand. Now we're working with a rotating menu of ten dishes.”

Appreciation from all sides

It's no coincidence that De Nieuwe Mensa has secured a spot in the restaurant:

"Their range of vegan meals is a valuable addition to what was already on offer. Over the past year, we’ve seen a continuous demand for their dishes. Students really want this. De Nieuwe Mensa is a success, and we’re delighted that they will continue to be present in the coming period."
Irmgard van GenderenHead of Facilities Management

Students are enthusiastic too. Amira Hertkorn, Isabel Geertman and Paula Steffens often eat at De Nieuwe Mensa. Why? “The price of €4.50 is very reasonable, though we preferred it when it was €4.20,” laughs Amira. “The portions are good for what you pay,” says Isabel. Paula adds, “And it’s a hot meal.” The students also appreciate that the food is vegan.

De Nieuwe Mensa is looking for board members and chefs!

For the coming year, De Nieuwe Mensa is looking for chefs and board members.

“We are very happy with every application. It genuinely feels like a small De Nieuwe Mensa family, and it’s growing – from board members to chefs.”

Experience in hospitality is not required. Enthusiasm, teamwork and a love of food are more important. Interested? Apply via the online formExternal link or scan the QR code at the food stand.
