Data breach at supplier of Canvas: update
Update May 6: last night, Canvas provider Instructure confirmed that data belonging to UvA students, lecturers and staff are also involved in the data breach.
What is known?
It is not yet known exactly which data of UvA students and staff have been affected. Instructure is still investigating the nature and scope of the breach. As part of this investigation, the provider is also examining which data of students and staff may have been impacted. As soon as more information becomes available, UvA will share further updates through the usual channels.
You can continue to use Canvas safely.

What does this mean for you?
We understand that news like this may raise questions or concerns. We advise you to be extra alert for suspicious emails such as messages that arrive unexpectedly or ask you for personal data.
Use of restored pages in Canvas
Following emergency maintenance, Canvas has been partially restored and you can access a number of pages again. When you use such a restored page for the first time, you will receive a one-off notification. You will then be asked to grant permission (“authorise”) so that you can use this functionality again.

We are monitoring the situation closely. As soon as there is more clarity, we will provide an update on the student and staff websites and on services.uva.nl. We advise you to remain extra vigilant for suspicious emails, for example messages that arrive unexpectedly or request personal information.
