You wouldn’t leave €580 lying around, would you? File a tax return

Published on 23-10-2025 12:27
Have you held a part-time job or summer job in the Netherlands and did your employer pay income taxes on your behalf? Then you might be able to get money back from the Dutch Tax Administration. On average, 18–23-year-olds with a part-time job as an employee get €579 back. File a tax return to find out if you can get money back too.

Filing your tax return is easy

It's generally quick and simple to check whether you're owed money. Open the tax return using the app ('Aangifte Inkomstenbelasting') or log in to Mijn Belastingdienst via belastingdienst.nl/jongerenExternal link. You’ll need your DigiD for both.

Many details are already completed on the tax return. Usually, you only need to check the information. Have your annual statement ('jaaropgave') from your employer handy. After checking, you’ll immediately see whether, and how much, money you’ll get back, even before submitting the return. In some cases, you might unfortunately have to pay extra, but this rarely happens.

File returns up to 5 years back

Check whether you can still file a return for previous years — you can go back up to 5 years. If you want to file returns for multiple years, or need to change or add information, you can do so via Mijn Belastingdienst on the website.
