Late last year, an expert panel visited the UvA and spoke with staff and students about the quality of education. The UvA met all 4 of their assessment points. ‘A positive rating shows we're properly monitoring the quality of education. This is obviously very important for the UvA,’ explained Rector Magnificus Peter-Paul Verbeek.
The panel praised our interdisciplinary and inter-faculty education, among other things. The UvA provides students with opportunities to go beyond their own field of study in order to tackle complex social issues.
There was also praise for the UvA’s Vision on Teaching and Learning, which describes the principles of good education, and which the panel noted has broad support. And they were positive about the UvA’s approach to revising the document: by soliciting input from the Central Student Council and Works Council to ensure bottom-up support.
The UvA's efforts to tackle AI, from AI-proofing its tests and assessments to incorporating AI into course curricula and exit qualifications, impressed the panel. The panel recommends that the UvA develop a central framework for AI policy, supported by sufficient financial resources.
Areas for improvement cited by the panel included creating more coherence among various strategy documents and finding ways to participation in decision-making (student and works councils) more attractive. The NVAO has given the UvA until 2030 to tackle its recommendations. We’re developing a programme to address areas for improvement and build on our strengths.
