This year, the way concert tickets for the UvA Orchestra J. Pzn Sweelinck at The Concertgebouw are provided will change. Whereas they previously were distributed for free via a raffle, tickets can now be purchased at a low price. This helps ensure that the concert hall will be fully occupied and minimizes the chance of no-shows. The proceeds from ticket sales will be used to organize a benefit concert by Sweelinck and Future Hope. Buy tickets for the Sweelinck concertExternal link.
This spring, the UvA Orchestra J.Pzn Sweelinck will play a wonderful project under the theme ‘Pioneer’. Every composer on the programme has created groundbreaking music, each in their own way. For example, Sibelius’ First Symphony was the piece of music that made an international breakthrough. It is a compelling story, full of romance and northern mysticism.
In addition, Britten, with Peter Grimes, became the first leading opera composer that England produced after Purcell. With his Sea Interludes from this opera, he sails undiscovered waters and takes the listener on an adventure.
Finally, Schubert is increasingly recognized as a pioneer in his time who dared to deviate from traditional forms and conventions. Due to his early death, we can only speculate about the musical innovations that he could still have produced. However, his Eighth Symphony shows that unfinished work can also leave its mark. Sweelinck takes you into the mystery and melancholy of this work full of lyricism and dramatic tension.
The UvA Orchestra J.Pzn Sweelinck, consisting of more than seventy enthusiastic and passionate students, has been led by conductor Jurjen Hempel since September 2024.
