As a student assessor for the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG), Axel advises the dean: he brings the student perspective to bear on important decisions. Therefore, he participates in meetings with directors of education and other faculty discussions. 'This year, I want to focus on building a vibrant student community. I'm doing this together with the dean, but also in close collaboration with study associations and the Faculty Student Council.'
'Because I've personally experienced that studying is often primarily about getting grades, and much less about the community. In my first two years, I mainly attended lectures and tutorials, but I had no idea what else was happening within the faculty. I want to change that and make it easier for students to connect with each other. This is also a unique opportunity for me to collaborate with professionals within the university and develop myself. For a third-year student, that's a unique experience.'
'The first few weeks have been mainly focused on getting acquainted: finding my way around the faculty, meeting new people, and connecting with all the student associations. On September 30th, I'm organizing an introductory lunch with the association chairs to discuss plans for this year. In the coming months, I especially hope to effectively represent the student perspective in meetings with the directors of education. From my experience with a student association, I know how important well-organized events are for building community.'
'Student well-being is my top priority. Think of topics like mental health, academic pressure, and the stress surrounding the binding study advice. During my internship at 113 Suicide Prevention, I heard how much students can struggle with performance pressure and feelings of loneliness. I want to help students struggling with this find it easier to connect with each other and have a place to share their concerns.'

Axel van den Berg is 23 years old and a third-year student of Child development. 'I'm currently studying Juvenile Delinquency and Protection for the minor at Utrecht University. My goal is to complete my bachelor's degree this year and then continue with a master's degree, probably in Clinical Developmental Psychology or Forensic Educational Sciences. I also train for marathons, enjoy golfing, and in the winter I teach skis to people with intellectual disabilities.'
