Roeterseiland Campus: Introducing sustainable project rooms in the J/K Building

Published on 31-01-2025
The UvA has undergone a remarkable transformation in the J/K building on the Roeterseiland campus. Here, 27 project rooms have been created, specifically designed for collaboration among students. This project was led by the UvA Library together with students and utilizes circular materials.

Project rooms and study spaces of various types can be found in different buildings on Roeterseiland Campus. However, there appeared to be a shortage of spaces where students can work together. The renovation of the J/K building provided an excellent opportunity to create more project rooms.

Where can I find these project rooms?

From the entrance hall of the J/K building (Valckenierstraat 65-67), walk through the corridor to the back. The project rooms are located on the first floor, the ground floor, and in the basement. You can reserve a project room through UvA SpacefinderExternal link. For detailed instructions on the availability and use of these spaces, please refer to the online location pageExternal link.

Students involved in the project

The Library asked the students from the Placemaking course what was needed to adapt the spaces to meet the wishes and needs of students. These students conducted further research on this. Their recommendations led to a design that genuinely takes the user perspective into account.

Carpet with flaws

‘Everything in the spaces is circular: from the carpet to the wallpaper and furniture,’ says Marloes van Wagtendonk Project Manager Innovative Learning Spaces at Campus Services University Library.

For example, a batch of carpet with weaving faults has been cut up into a colourful mosaic of carpets, cleaned furniture and computer screens from other UvA locations are given a second life, and mirrors originating from a former Teylers Museum exhibition create a visually larger space. For discarded books from the Humanities collection, artist Tariq Heijboer was asked to give them a new life as wallpaper.
