The Faculty of Humanities is governed by the Faculty Board. The Faculty Board consists of the dean, the director of operational management, a faculty research director, the directors of of the College of Humanities and Graduate School of Humanities, and a student assessor.
Unlike the members of the Faculty Student Council, the student assessor is not elected by students of the faculty, but appointed through an application procedure. The student assessor functions independently, but maintains contact with the Faculty Student Council, the Programme Committee, study associations and students.
This year, Hidde Heijnis represents the perspective of students.
'Dear fellow Humanities students,
My name is Hidde Heijnis. I am happy to introduce myself as this year's student assessor on the Faculty Board. The Faculty Board makes all major decisions at our faculty. It is my role to bring student perspectives to the table. Together with the Faculty Student Council, I will try to make sure student interests are well guarded, but I cannot do that without you.
I would like to represent all students at our faculty but as an individual I can’t always properly convey the diverse set of backgrounds and experiences of all my fellow students. So never hesitate to come to me with your insights. Are you unhappy about university policy? Do you have ideas about the future of our education? Do you feel unsafe or do you have experiences you would like to share? Feel free to reach out to me.
There are a lot of important issues currently being talked about such as the implementation of the budget cuts on higher education, the future of the buildings of our faculty like P.C. Hoofthuis, the role of the university in society and the long term vision of our institution. Decisions on these topic can’t and shouldn’t be made without the input from students.
Do you have any input or ideas? Please send an email to hidde.heijnis@student.uva.nl.’
Another student assessor advises the Executive Board, the central governing body of the UvA. As of 1 September, Willem Volker, a student of Philosophy and International Relations, is the UvA's new student assessor. He advises the Executive Board and puts student-related topics on the agenda.
