The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority conducts inspections based on reports. As a smoker you might not notice anything, but the university ends up paying a fine. That’s money we’d much rather spend on your education and research!
Smoking on campus not only risks fines, but it also affects others. People entering or leaving buildings and staff working behind reception desks could be exposed to smoke. It may be difficult to speak to a smoker about this, but doing so can really help.
It might also not always be clear to smokers exactly where the smoke-free area begins, especially when they’re standing near an exit that opens onto a sidewalk. By reminding each other of this, we can prevent misunderstandings and fines and ensure that smoke-free zones remain truly smoke-free, while everyone feels comfortable on campus.
There are signs, posters and pavement markers to show that the campus is a smoke-free area, but they only work if we take responsibility together.
Together, we can create a healthy and safe learning environment and avoid unnecessary fines.
