With you, the Faculty of Science wants to be a more diverse and inclusive community with you, one in which everyone feels welcome and valued.

Grassroots Science4all: What does it mean?

You can request financial support for different kinds of activities, such as a symposium, cultural or social activities, PR materials, or a project with secondary education students. Some examples:

  • ALTAIR+: volunteers introduce STEM and the faculty to school children in the area surrounding Science Park.
  • Purple Friday: Faculty of Science study associations organise activities for Purple Friday at the campus.

As you can see, there are many options. Surprise us! In addition, the Faculty Diversity Officer’s assistant can help you carry out your proposal.

Your plan will be evaluated by the Grassroots commission. This consists of:

  • Faculty of Science dean Susan te Pas
  • Faculty of Science Diversity officer, Boy Menist
  • A student nominated by the Faculty Student Council

The proposals are assessed on whether or not they contribute to one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Their contribution to a future-proof impact on the Faculty of Science. This means that the proposal cannot be relevant to the people involved alone, and instead has a valuable impact on the entire Faculty of Science community, now and in the future.
  2. Their contribution to the visibility and representation of specific groups of employees and/or students of the Faculty of Science.
  3. Their contribution to a wider awareness on diversity and inclusion within the Faculty of Science community.

The commission looks forward to your inspiring ideas with which we can work together on a more diverse and inclusive Faculty.

Submitting: What does it entail?

In your proposal, you must include the following:

  • Project name
  • Names of the people working on the project (students and/or employees)
  • Project description (no longer than 1 page): What is your goal, which kind of impact do you wish to create, and how do you want to achieve this?
  • Detailed budget request (between €500 and €5000)
  • Timeline (the proposal must have a start date and final date)

After the final date you write a short report on the project’s trajectory and expenses. As mentioned before, you can get support at implementing your proposal from the Faculty Diversity Officer’s assistant.

Deadlines 2025

There are 4 opportunities in 2025 to apply for this subsidy, as long as the allotted budget of €25.000 isn’t exceeded. The remaining deadline for those opportunities is 1 December 2025

For the current, third round, you can submit your proposal before 15 October 2025 to Heleen Verline, h.e.w.verlinde@uva.nlExternal link. If you have any questions, you can direct those to her, too.
