The Faculty of Humanities currently does not have any exchanges or collaborations with Israeli universities and institutions.

End of student exchange agreement with Ben Gurion University

For the Dutch-taught Bachelor’s programme in Hebrew Language and Culture, the Faculty of Humanities had a student exchange agreement with Ben Gurion University. This agreement expired in the summer of 2023 and has been suspended since 7 October 2023 due to negative travel advice for Israel. Discussions about renewing the agreement were discontinued in late 2023. A possible reconsideration of the collaboration is not currently under consideration.

Suspension of student exchange agreement with Hebrew University of Jerusalem

In March 2025, the Advisory Committee on Collaboration with Third Parties advised to suspend the University of Amsterdam’s student exchange agreement with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The UvA has followed this advice.External link This exchange programme, in which many students of the Faculty of Humanities have participated over the years, has also been suspended since October 2023.

No research collaborations

The Faculty of Humanities currently has no formal research collaborations involving Israeli partners. The faculty abides to the UvA’s moratorium on not entering any new collaborations within the Horizon programme, which the University decided on in JuneExternal link.

Call on the Dutch government

The faculty acts based on the conviction that academic freedom should be rooted in the international rule of law and human rights. This is also the reason why the dean of the Faculty of Humanities, together with other deans and the Executive Board, has sent a letter to the minister in order to call on the Dutch government to do more to enforce international lawExternal link.
