Rector Magnificus Peter-Paul Verbeek will continue to serve as President on a temporary basis. From 1 September, Richard Goldstein will join the Board as Vice-President and portfolio holder for finance and business management. Verbeek and Goldstein will divide the portfolios amongst themselves until the vacancy is filled. The Supervisory Board will soon start the process of recruiting a new chairperson, in consultation with the representative advisory bodies.

Edith Hooge: ‘After an intense year, it is with pain in my heart that I step down from the role of Present of the Executive Board. The UvA is a wonderful university and despite starting my role in the midst of difficult circumstances after the events of May 2024, I began my work full of enthusiasm. My ambition was to strengthen the university community and contribute to society through open debate and scientific research. Together with the deans and my fellow board members, I have worked hard to promote nuance, diversity of opinion, connection, and a safe campus for everyone. However, in this day and age, precisely these things are not easy to achieve, including at the UvA. It has placed too much strain on my physical and mental health. In the end, I was not able to experience enough joy in the role, which is needed to sustain this demanding position. I would like to warmly thank everyone I have worked with for their commitment to our university.’

Jolande Sap, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board: ‘We greatly regret that Edith has decided to stop as President, but we respect her decision. Edith has dedicated herself to the UvA with all her heart and soul. We have found her to be a particularly warm and engaging leader and would like to thank her for her tremendous effort and dedication over the past year. To safeguard administrative continuity, we will be starting the recruitment procedure for a successor as soon as possible.’
