Like all other universities, the University of Amsterdam is facing considerable internal and external dynamics and uncertainty. Financially, 2026 is an interim year with a relatively stable government grant. After 2026, cutbacks follow. The 2026 budget contains a small deficit of €3 million. This can be absorbed by our reserves. Due to the cutbacks after 2026, a period of measures will follow to align the size of personnel and other expenses accordingly. This financial pressure is already being felt throughout the UvA.

The biggest concerns are the financial feasibility of the Accommodations Plan and the threat of further cuts due to the restriction of international student enrollment. The UvA supports the call from Universities of the Netherlands (UNL) to the House of Representatives to reverse the cuts in higher education.
